Happy, Healthy Hens

All our hens are kept free range. Most of the time they are to be found wandering the orchard, garden and farmyard. If I have to go out for any substantial amount of time, they get shut in the orchard which is where their hen-house is, and is fully fenced to 6’ high.
They are fed a ration of free range layers' pellets, with a bit of GM-free mixed corn scattered on the ground for them in the afternoon.
Plus whatever they find pecking around during the day, of course.

We keep a mixture of pure breed hens - welsummer, crested cream legbar, maran, araucana (cockerel only) - and laying hybrids - sussex stars,
suffolk noir, fenning white, bluebelle, and sussex blacktail .
This diversity of birds gives us a wonderfully colourful supply
of top-quality eggs.
